Pack like a pro, or maybe just a semi-pro

Packing can be very stressful, especially if you’re a woman and a mom. I may or mostly may not be qualified to talk about this…so let’s consider this as a letter to myself on how to be a responsible packer, maybe one day it will happen…or maybe not.

There are two types of packers in the world, those who have it together and those who don’t. The ones that have it together can fit a weeks worth of clothes and toiletries into a carry-on, no questions asked. Those that don’t end up traveling with 40 outfit changes for a 5 day trip and need 2 checked bags and neither one makes the weight limit.

I am the later. It doesn’t matter how long we are going to be gone or where we are going I am an over packer. If I haven’t worn it in 2 years, I will bring it. Need a purse for every outfit and matching shoes, I’m your girl. Going to the beach for a week but there’s an off chance that you might get invited to a black tie gala while you are there, I’ll take formal wear just incase. Why pack one sunscreen when I can bring 10. Of course I am going to use my 30 step skincare routine every single day and yes I will also want to blow out my hair even though it’s 90 degrees outside with 99 percent humidity. If you can relate to this at all keep reading…if you can’t please email me advice, I’m open to it.

My first suggestion is to make a list. Make a list and check it twice to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything and be honest with yourself as you are making said list. Double check your list against your day to day activities so you know exactly what you will need. Also check the weather of where you are going so you know what to expect.

My second suggestion for packing responsibly is to purchase travel size toiletries so that they take up less space. Also pair down your normal home routine to a more efficient routine while on the road. I use different kinds of shampoos throughout the week, when I travel I only bring one. In fact if you are staying at a hotel, soap and shampoo is provided. Also take that full face of glam makeup down to a more natural look and bring less product. The bottom line is BRING LESS PRODUCT. Make sure you put all your liquids inside a ziplock bag and seal them up in case something leaks.

My third suggestion is just pack less clothes. If you haven’t worn it in 3 years you aren’t going to wear it now. If all you are going to do in Hawaii is lay on the beach you don’t need dressy clothes, even NYE is celebrated on the beach, so a full sequin gown isn’t necessary. If you don’t bring dressy clothes you don't need dressy shoes. Comfortable walking shoes will do you just fine. In fact you can even find some that look cute with sundresses. If you are only going to be gone 5 days you don’t need 20 swimsuits, you need like 2. Bring versatile clothing options that can be mixed and matched. You don’t need 5 cardigans, just one that goes with everything. Less is more when it comes to traveling.

Repeat after me, less is more when it comes to traveling. You will be ok without all the comforts of home at your fingertips. You will never see these people again so who cares if you don't wear different shorts everyday of your trip.

PS I am traveling again in a month, I will let you know how it goes.
