Airport stress and how to avoid it

It’s hard to miss the constant articles on flight delays, cancelations and lost luggage. Some issues associated with flying can’t be controlled, at least not by the passengers, but some can. If you want a low stress airport experience then you best control what you can, when you can.

Airports are not the place to be procrastinators. Give yourself plenty of time to check your bags and get through security, especially if you know your airport is a high volume airport, or if you know you are traveling at a peak time. Don't be shocked when you arrive at the airport 2 days before Christmas and see a massive crowd, you aren’t the only one going to visit family for the holidays.

  • TSA PreCheck allows you to sometimes skip long lines at security and you don’t have to take your shoes off.

  • Clear does the same thing as TSA PreCheck and you can sign up on the spot at the airport, no appointment required.

  • Most airports should have estimated wait times for security posted online, check that before you leave. It will let you know what to expect.

  • On my resources page I have quick links to all things airport security related.

Both of these services can save you a lot of time and some credit cards reimburse you for the cost.

  • Download your airline’s app and check in online. Doing this allows you to skip paper ticketing and checking in at the airport. You can even pay for your bags online. So all you will need to do is print bag tags and drop the bags off. If you have priority with your airline of choice there is usually a separate bag drop line. All of this can save you a lot of time if your airport is busy.

  • Fly with only carry-on bags. This will save you a lot of time on both ends of your flight.

Plan where you are parking ahead of time. Want to really save time, have someone give you a ride. Nothing beats door to door service. But if that option isn’t available have a plan, and a back up plan incase the lot you want is full. Make sure if you are parking off site that you account for the shuttle service time or tram time.

Purchase your snacks ahead of time, and bring them with you. Not only will this save you money but it will also save you from the airport kiosk freakout when all the milk chocolate covered pretzels are sold out. Or there are zero vegetarian options available anywhere for meals.

Lastly remember to take a deep breath and that a smile goes a long way.
